In preparation for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel feast day (7/16), I've been attending the novena since 7/7 at St. Joseph's Carmelite Monastery. The experience is deeply satisfying and no wonder so many people gather at the monastery. There are priests (a Carmelite & a Jesuit) available for confessions many hours during each day: after morning mass & before & after evening mass.

It is comparatively easy not to be absorbed in our own suffering, but the suffering of those we love is apt to become a constant and unhappy obsession, against which we must struggle: first by prayer, confiding those we love to God in complete filial abandonment, then by work, and also by an occupation chose outside the center of our thoughts and affections. Finally by doing good to others, we can try to forget a little of our dear ones' burdens, which are a thousand times more painful than the ones we carry alone.

Elisabeth Leseur
"I thirst for sympathy, to bare my soul to the souls that are dear to me, to speak of God and immortality and the interior life ..."
Elisabeth confides to her journal the acute pain she suffered when not only husband but friends as well attacked or made light of what she treasured in her heart:
Bitter suffering of an evening spent in hearing my faith and spiritual things mocked at, attacked and criticized. God helped me to maintain interior charity and exterior calm; to deny or betray nothing, and yet not to irritate by too rigid assertions. But how much effort and inner distress this involves, and how necessary is divine grace to assist my weakness!

Currently working at Associated Catholic Cemeteries, I am thankful that I am able to share my faith openly. However, I encounter many people, including my own husband's friends, who do not share the same belief. That's when I find much solace in Elisabeth's writing. I am grateful to St. Paul Cathedral, MN, for that's where I found Archbishop Fulton Sheen's CD about "What Every Couple Should Know about Marriage and Prayers" by St. Joseph's Media...Archbishop Fulton Sheen received a spiritual direction from Fr. Leseur in 1924.
